Levels

From your first words
to getting by on your own

Twenty-two weeks from zero to B1, in 30-hour modules. You move up when you show the level, not when the calendar says so. Arriving with some Spanish? The placement test puts you where you belong.

  1. A1Beginner

    Weeks 1–4 · 60 h

«Hola, soy Lena. Un café con leche, por favor.»

Introduce yourself and handle everyday situations, with a little help.

  2. A2Elementary

    Weeks 5–12 · 120 h

«El fin de semana fuimos a la playa y comimos en la Barceloneta.»

Talk about your life and your plans, and manage day-to-day on your own.

  3. B1Intermediate

    Weeks 13–22 · 150 h

«Creo que deberíamos quedarnos un mes más. Te explico por qué.»

Get by in most situations, give your opinion and explain your plans.

The 11 modules, two weeks each
  • A1.1 · Getting started
  • A1.2 · Living in Barcelona
  • A2.1 · Recent experiences
  • A2.2 · Stories and journeys
  • A2.3 · Past, present and solutions
  • A2.4 · Everyday independence
  • B1.1 · Narrating and responding
  • B1.2 · Opinions and information
  • B1.3 · Work and study
  • B1.4 · Advice and hypotheses
  • B1.5 · Mediation and project

Each module ends with a task that checks reading, listening, writing and speaking. The length of B1 is an initial plan. Aligned with the CEFR and the Instituto Cervantes Curriculum Plan. Casual sits outside this pathway.

In the city

You learn it in class.
You use it at lunch.

Every module is built around situations you meet in Barcelona the same week. Here are four of them, each with a line you will be able to say. The photos are Blau students on our city walks.

  • Blau students at lunch on a city walk
Eating out A1 ¿Nos trae la cuenta, por favor? Could we have the bill, please?
  • Blau students walking along a metro platform in Barcelona
Getting around A1 ¿Qué línea va a Glòries? Which line goes to Glòries?
  • Blau students around a café table, laughing
Making plans A2 ¿Quedamos mañana después de clase? Shall we meet tomorrow after class?
  • Blau students chatting on a bench on the Rambla del Poblenou
Your life here A2 Llevo dos semanas en Barcelona y ya me muevo sola. I have been in Barcelona for two weeks and I already get around on my own.

How we teach

You learn Spanish by using it

Classes are communicative from the first day, and the city is part of the course: campus activities and Barcelona give you somewhere to practise, with a goal.

  • Real life, from week oneEvery module is built around situations you will meet in Barcelona: housing, transport, shopping, eating out, plans.
  • Small groupsTwelve students at most, so everyone speaks in every class.
  • Four skills, not just grammarReading, listening, writing and speaking are all assessed, together with how you handle real tasks.
  • Checked every 30 hoursContinuous assessment and an integrated task at the end of each module, so progress is never a surprise.
  • Support when a skill falls behindTargeted work and reassessment on that skill, instead of repeating the whole level.

I took a B1 Spanish course for one week and really enjoyed the experience. Our teacher was friendly, encouraging, and adapted the lessons to our needs. Since there were only 2–3 students in the class, it felt almost like a private course, with plenty of opportunities to practise speaking.

We worked on real-life situations as well as current topics through discussions and role-plays, which made the lessons both engaging and practical. We were also able to review grammar points whenever we asked. Overall, it was a great learning experience, and I would definitely recommend this course!

I really enjoy the (advanced) Spanish classes, especially the ones during the week. The afternoon teacher is so much fun. Seriously, these are the best Spanish lessons I've ever taken.

Also love the morning classes, she always prepares her lessons so well to make them interesting.

FAQ

About the courses

What students ask before choosing a programme.

Do I need any Spanish before I start?

No. Complete beginners are welcome. A digital placement test at least one week before arrival puts you in the right group, and the result does not affect your booking.

How long are the classes?

Classes run Monday to Friday in 60-minute sessions. Basic is three hours of General Spanish a day; Standard adds one hour of Spanish for work; Intensive adds that hour and one hour of conversation. Casual is one hour a day of practical Spanish. Timetables depend on your level and availability.

Will Casual take me to a new level?

No. Casual is practical Spanish for your holiday and everyday situations, and it does not follow the level pathway, so it does not promise a new level. If progress is your goal, choose Basic, Standard or Intensive.

Will a more intensive programme get me to the next level faster?

The General Spanish pathway is the same in every programme: 15 hours a week, 30 hours per module. The extra hours in Standard and Intensive build specific skills and give you more practice, but they do not replace the core.

How is my progress assessed?

Through continuous assessment and portfolio work, plus an integrated task at the end of every 30-hour module. Reading, listening, writing and speaking are all assessed. After 60 hours there is an A1 gate, and after 180 hours an A2 gate before entry to B1.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes, if you attend at least 80% of your classes. At the end of your course you receive a report and a Blau certificate with your dates, the hours you studied and the level you have shown. It is not an official qualification: not a DELE diploma or a certification from the Instituto Cervantes. With Casual, the certificate records your participation and hours, not a level.

What happens on public holidays?

There are no classes on public holidays, and those classes are not made up.

Can my hours change if my group is small?

Yes. When a group has fewer than five students, Blau may reduce the teaching hours. This applies to every programme, including Casual. Groups have twelve students at most.

What if one skill falls behind?

You get targeted support and a reassessment on that skill. Moving to the next level depends on the skills you show, not only on the hours you attend.

Where do the classes take place?

In the same building as your studio, at Carrer del Perú 110. The classrooms are on level −1, and some sessions use other campus settings.

When can I start?

Any Monday, subject to availability. Check-in is the Sunday before, from 16:00.
